Flyers 5, Seattle 2: I feel for the Seattle fans. On a huge sports night for them, one that involved a traumatic playoff baseball loss, this was the throwaway road early-season hockey game. Been there, in the last two weeks even.
I did watch a little of this game, though, and good thing, because it was easily the most entertaining game that the Orange and Black have played so far this season. I guess the game in Carolina was pretty fun, too. But this one was much more free-flowing than the other three games on this homestand.
As the guys mentioned on the post-game pod, the power play just looks a lot better this season. They still sat in the basement league-wide before last night’s game (a familiar spot), but the puck movement and chances were just so much better than they had been in past years. Goals were coming.
On Monday, they did. The Flyers scored two power-play goals in this one to get out of the basement. Nifty little play by Trevor Zegras here frees up Cam York for a perfect shooting lane with both Noah Cates and Tyson Foerster in front. I am no puck expert, but that seems like what you want.
The Power Play is COOKING. 🔥

Zegras has an assist in all of his last five games. Charlie has a great piece on the site about this crazy hybrid center-wing setup that Rick Tocchet has him going with. If you will recall, Zegras wants to play center but is not very good at taking faceoffs (a huge part of playing center). So, the Flyers sometimes have Christian Dvorak take the faceoff and those guys switch places immediately. It’s not the type of movement you always see on a hockey rink, even I was like, “That looks a little different!”
Anyway, there is a lot more to it than what I just wrote. As always, read Charlie.
Good Travis Konecny night, too. He scored his first goal of the season, won a fight, and chirped at his fellow combatant in the penalty box: Look at your face!
Travis Konecny is hilarious.

Bob Myers, Hail to the Chief: I made the obvious jokes about the Devils and Crystal Palace yesterday — I did leave out one about Joe Whitt Jr.’s defensive schemes, though, wonder what Bob thinks is going on there — but yes, Bob Myers is now officially the president of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. Now, what does that mean? Derek and Kyle podded about the news, and I have some thoughts on the situation.
Not too much of a surprise: Myers was a surprise consultant on the Commanders coaching search that ultimately settled on Dan Quinn And Dan Quinn’s Backwards Hat last year. We knew that Myers and Josh Harris had a previous professional working relationship. Harris reportedly tried to hire Myers in the wake of the Burnergate scandal back in 2018.
Do we buy that Myers wants more of an all-encompassing role? Yeah, I can buy that. Running the Warriors was a stressful job, from dealing with Draymond Green’s latest kerfuffle and a super hands-on owner in Joe Lacob. I could see Myers wanting to stay away from the day-to-day. And plus, as far as the NBA is concerned, he already has plenty of titles.
That said, the Sixers’ situation is what it is. Daryl Morey is probably on the hot seat. And even if Morey is still reporting to Harris directly in this arrangement, which is reportedly the case, Bob Myers is still a basketball guy no matter how interested he is in The Wide World of Sports. The optics are the optics.
A better question that Derek brought up: Who has Josh Harris’ ear? That is the better question than what the exact org tree is. Elton Brand was the Sixers general manager for the disastrous 2018-2020 era, which fans still hold against him. But not all of those decisions were Brand’s doing, other people had Harris’ ear during that time. Might Myers, even if he does not wish to run the Sixers, have some sway when it comes to those major decisions?
It might not be a bad thing: Kyle said there is a mutual respect between Myers and Morey. That would make sense, Morey’s Rockets were the only team that really challenged the Steph-KD Warriors for a few years there. Maybe they end up working together. From the outside, this does not look like Jerry Colangelo trying to get Sam Hinkie out of the paint. Myers is a smart guy, Morey is a smart guy, maybe the whole thing works out. It’s at least possible.
And in their final preseason game, the Sixers started Joel Embiid and Adem Bona together. That was weird! The two-big lineup addresses the rebounding and rim protection issues, but woof, that spacing on offense would be rough. But the Sixers’ weakest position is power forward, and you can do one of three things at the 4…
Go super small (Kelly Oubre, or eventually, Paul George)
Go super big (Bona)
Go with a two-way guy (Dominick Barlow, or eventually)
We will see what Nurse has in store for Game 1 in Bahstannn. My money is on Barlow.

I do not know how we are supposed to respond to that insanely loaded Monday sports night. You had the Flyers locally, you had Game 7 of the ALCS, you had two pretty darn good Monday Night Football games. This really is the best time of the year sports-wise.
Congratulations to Cousin Jeff and the Blue Jays, by the way. But something about triumphant Toronto Game 7 home wins gives me PTSD. Can’t put my finger on what that is…
Buh-buh-buh-buh basketball! The NBA is back tonight, I will curious to see how it looks back on NBC. Sixers tip off tomorrow night, and I think I need another 24 hours to sort out my feelings about them… after what was a shockingly positive preseason for the local basketball team.
